Getting Out and “Bouts”

Getting Out and “Bouts”

Even though I enjoy photographing events of all shapes and sizes, it’s important to me shoot new activities on a regular basis so I can keep my work fresh. I especially like capturing sporting events I’ve never shot before. So last Saturday Lisa and I decided to check out our local roller derby team, the Atlanta Rollergirls. It was our first experience with roller derby, so we definitely had our fair share of preconceived notions. Yes, there was plenty of the expected pushing, shoving and scrapping (and tattoos, too!) but as we watched the two bouts of the evening –  the All-Star Dirty South Derby Girls take on the Gold Coast Derby Grrrls, then the Apocalypstix face off against the Denim Demons – we realized how much strength, skill, strategy and athleticism is also involved in this little-known sport. To top it off, the derby folks were such a nice, friendly group of people. Next time we want to bring our friends, a cooler of beer and root for our favorite skaters, including Wild Cherri, Afro Dykee, Quadratic Abrasion, Hate Ashbury and Bruze Orman, to name just a few cool characters.

Go to their website check them out.
